I definitely over-simplified things by switching Rose to Ryan without considering the huge impact it would have. There's a huge amount of meta that could come from that- as you say sexuality and what stories people are allowed to tell on "children's" television. It's possible (even likely) that Mickey might have been Michelle, which would have also vastly shifted the landscape of the fandom.
