I think as some others have said, it is about relating to characters as well. I'm mainly into Torchwood, although I know Dr Who very well, and to be honest I don't like any character bashing, but the most horrific things I've seen written about a character are the fans who hate Ianto. I was shocked to discover the vitriol, and literally referring to him as "that thing". It was nastier than the things I had seen on the Gwen hating comms. Now as I said I don't see the need for any of it, but clearly it is complex, and I wonder if Ianto is referred to with the same nastiness as hated women characters because he is a love interest for the male lead??
Also there is no Tosh hate, literally none. Now this is a woman who is in love with a man who doesn't notice her, and who does he have an affair with? Gwen. Who is living with her boyfriend. I think if you take everything else away, those two things are enough to upset women, who relate to Tosh. I relate to Tosh, she is the nerdy woman who feels unnoticed by men.
So yeah, I guess I'm saying that thinking about it, there is something there about the women who we all found difficult to cope with when they were the popular girl in school, and then they are on our screen. Hence Rose hate as well.

I did love Dr Polaski though!
