Because you know I spend too much time thinking about it.

A graphics poll, with some general icon questions, and some very specific.

I honestly run across good icons through other people's comments and checking out those who have good taste. However, I do also check out icon comms.

I do this as well. If I see someone with an icon I love, I'll hunt down the icon-maker when possible.

*gasp* That's how I found you!

Ditto this.

I often find new iconmakers by clicking on the keywords of icons I like, but if I'm looking for something specific, I search LJ for comms by interests.

What's a ticky box? *feels stupid*

[identity profile] clockwork-sky.livejournal.com 2010-01-30 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohhh! So just ticky boxes for fun. I see, I see... Thank you for this enlightenment.

When looking for new icons I usually go to comms of joint iconmakers.

Things like mood themes and headers are fun sometimes, but I am okay with the current balance of mostly icons with the occasional surprise other graphic. I mostly find icons either through setting out to look through a show's icon com like [livejournal.com profile] dwicons, seeing icons pop up in a more specific community that I watch (like [livejournal.com profile] time_and_chips), or tracking down icons I like that I see other people using.

Disorganised thoughts:

I don't have a mood theme and I hate the ordinary LJ ones. So I'd be quite receptive if the right one came along. It would have to be non-animated because I find flashing things irritating and I don't want to have to dodge them on my own journal.

I'm not interested in having a header or banner, but I AM interested in collecting larger graphics to go in my screensaver folder. I have a few in there that were designed as headers, but they don't look as good as those that are designed to be wallpapers for something close to my resolution (1440x900). I don't use wallpapers as wallpapers per se; I find anything remotely photoesque too distracting to have on my desktop all the time.

I hate having to hunt through a massive icon post to find the one or two icons from fandoms I'm interested in, but OTOH I love going to a post looking for one thing and finding something else I never knew I had to have. So I guess I'm in favour of multi-fandom posts, but also in favour of icon makers holding onto stray icons until they have a decent handful from that fandom to post.

Forgive the generalities; I can't honestly recall how you do these things, as it's been a while since I mined your journal for icons. (Currently around 12% of my in-use icons are yours, BTW.)

[identity profile] kalikethewind.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I am honestly happy as long as you post graphics. I don't even care that 90% of them are fandoms I don't watch or know much about. I just like your graphics :)

I like bigger posts though..but if that means I have to wait a long time..pfft. Post 3 icons I don't care haha

I generally search by interest and find communities for the specific things I like..for instance 24 or criminal minds :)

and I like posts with all kinds of fandoms because it's interesting to see the differences in the style of crops and coloring you use for each :)

Blah blah blah POST! :)

I don't see the need to change to a community..it works just fine as it is doesn't it?

[identity profile] kalikethewind.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
and what is their main complaint? that it doesn't show up under communities? are they so stupid they can't find the journal that has ICONS in the title? haha

I mean it's a lil annoying when someone has a journal and also posts their icons there and they don't use "icons" as a tag so you have to root through a lot of their useless drivel..but your icon journal is..ohmygodGASP nothing but graphics...

I'm confused. Of course this isn't a new state of mind for me but..still..what the hell?

:)

I didn't answer the first two because I honestly don't have a preference.

I often find icons through the icon equivalent of citation chasing -- find an icon I like, look up who made it, look at their icon journal (and then in the comments of their icon journal, I'll see another icon I like, so I'll look up that user, and repeat until I suddenly have a billion new icons saved on my computer). I only go looking for certain comms when I'm looking for something specific, like a certain character or episode.

Like a lot of others have said, if I see someone with an icon I like I go to their userpics to get the maker's name and then check out that person's com/journal. If they post enough icons I either think are really pretty or in fandoms I follow then I add/watch them.

in order:

Really large posts tend to overwhelm me. I get burnout and don't really appreciate the second half of the hundred on a single page.

posts with only a few subjects make sorting through tags much simpler/more efficient

When I'm getting into a new fandom, I'll hit the fandom-specific comms or find the newsletter for that fandom and open up a handful of icons posts, but I friend a few iconmakers, and really that's where most of my icons come from.

I love to look at wallpapers, but I don't actually save many.

[identity profile] sunlitdays.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't pick moodthemes not because I wouldn't love to see what you could do with one, but because as a fellow graphics maker, I know how much of a pain in the butt they can be and I don't wish that on anyone! lol

I voted for more Firefly & Superman; it's how I found you in the first place. ;) But I usually love whatever you choose to make.

[identity profile] time-lordy.livejournal.com 2010-01-31 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
I think the work you do here is great. I myself have no clue how to make an icon, and really no desire to learn. I think this place works well as it is, a journal.

what else? more Classic Who is never a bad thing.

We need to get you into Supernatural so that you can make all the prettys for our fandom. :D

I'm actually getting my wish of new Highlander icons at our new [livejournal.com profile] hl_stills community which makes me very happy. Thanks for contributing.

So I took the poll but I'm not really sure I get to count because I've got my 6 icon slots and judging from past experience I don't reallly cycle icons through them....

Although have you seen Monsoon Wedding? With its lovely bright colors it might be fun to iconify...

And I basically get my icons from myself with my mad skillz or from you :P

Passing by (in search of icons ;-) )

[identity profile] kehlen-crow.livejournal.com 2010-02-22 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Looking for new icons is always very much not-fun for me. I look everywhere I can think of, and find one icon I like in about 20-30-50 entries. Because I know what emotion I want the icon to be of, and -that- is difficult to come by. :-)

I'd be very interested in a Man From U.N.C.L.E. header or two.:)
