Apocalypse Now
Aug. 11th, 2001 11:28 pmI had a really rotten day today. Really rotten. I was supposed to be having an excellent time at the Radiohead concert with Khalil. Ha ha ha ha ha ha. The following is a long story explaining why my day was rotten.
Well, Khalil and I thought the Radiohead concert started at 2. We got to Bull Run Park a little before 1 and got our tickets, only to realize that the gates opened at 2. We waited outside in the horrible, stifling heat for over an hour. I thought I was going to die of heat stroke. They are late opening the gates. The gates open at 2:20. We get inside, and find out, hey, not only does the concert not start at 2, it doesn't start till 4! And that's only the opening bands. Radiohead doesn't go on till 6.
So we have several hours to kill in this really horrible heat. After waiting a few of them, the heat finally starts to cool off. However, this is because of the enormous storm clouds that are rolling in. The sky starts to look really threatening, and thunder rumbles in the distance. (Keep in mind, this is an outdoor venue, in the middle of a big friggin field.) Officials announce that if lightening comes up, we should all go wait in the cars, but when it clears up, the concert will start.
So then the sky opens up and rain starts pouring down, and the thunder gets decidedly more threatening sounding, and lightening starts up. We make a run to the car.
We sit in the car for about 2 HOURS as this storm dumps enormous amounts of rain on us, as well as plenty of thunder and lightening. Finally, it starts to lighten up a little. We exit the car to find that the field has turned into a giant puddle. In some places, the water is more than knee deep. People are f***ing swimming in some places! The concert field was FLOODED. Not only that, a tree across the way had been hit with lightening, was seriously on fire, and was sending billowing waves of smoke at us. It was like the friggin apocalypse. We wait outside in the knee-deep water, because they are not letting anyone back inside the gates. We wait, and wait, and wait. It continues to rain on us. We are soaked and swiftly becoming very cold.
After several false alarms, the security guards finally announce that the concert is cancelled. We trudge back to the car, completely soaked. It takes over an hour just to get out of the f-ing parking lot, and of course I was driving the stick shift.
Traffic is horrible, and stressful, and it is still raining. And of course, the concert isn't postponed, its just cancelled. There goes my only concert of the summer.
