Nine & Rose genfic rec list last updated March 14, 2010.
New recs are labeled as such. Also, I've starred (*) a few of my favorites.
My Nine/Rose recs page was getting so unwieldy, I made the executive decision to move all the non-shippy fics over here. Romantic/shippy fics of all ratings remain at the main Nine/Rose recs page.
A Phantom of Clouds by Doyle.
Author's summary: Jack has team spirit. Rose has alcohol. The Doctor has a story.
Notes: Jack's desire to do some team-building leads to some painful revelations.
Anchor Line by ponygirl.
Author's summary: The people Rose left behind aren't supposed to die.
Notes: Rose, Jack, the Doctor, and the grieving process.
And I Feel Fine by Doyle.
Author's summary: After the end of the world, there's chips.
Notes: A lovely little tag to "The End of the World".
* Ariadne Quits by Rhilin.
Author's summary: This is why Rose isn't allowed to cook any more.
Notes: An amusing short in which Rose gets lost inside the TARDIS (which does, in fact, relate to why she's been barred from cooking).
Bleep Encounter by WMR.
Author's summary: "I met the Doctor and you are very definitely not him. Unless you're all called 'Doctor' on Mars, the Doctor is a skinny streak of bacon in trainers, keeps nattering on about his ex."
Notes: Post "The Runaway Bride" Donna runs into the Ninth Doctor while he waits for Rose. Their encounter is full of the win you would expect.
Dalek, Diverging by cyropi.
Author's summary: In Dalek, Rose accidentally freed the Dalek by touching it. What would have happened if she hadn't?
Notes: An alternate, rather darker version of "Dalek".
Demagogue by Saganami Dreams.
Author's summary: Emotions, perceptions, what you think you know - these can rule you and blind you to the truth. (Word of the day fiction: demagogue)
Notes: A dead world and misunderstandings. A fic with some bite, in which Rose is at her best, and the Doctor gets it wrong at first.
* Dirty Laundry by Asano.
Author's summary: Just why does Rose Tyler take her all her washing home to Jackie?
Notes: A couple of humorous vignettes about Rose trying to do her laundry on the TARDIS. The Doctor is about as helpful as one might expect.
Fair Trade by DameRuth.
Author's summary: Written for lafemmedarla's Mini Nine ficathon on LJ, from a prompt by cathica; story to include the following things: Nine/Rose, a pot of good soup, the end of a long day.
Notes: One of those early-on, behind the scenes, getting-to-know-you sort of fics that rings very true for me.
Goddesses, Consorts, and Explosions by Lady Yueh.
Author's summary: SG-1 may have just met a team that surpasses their own insanity.
Notes: Stargate SG-1 crossover. Nine, Jack, and Rose run into SG-1 on alien world. Hysterical.
Healing by measi.
Author's summary: The Doctor’s thoughts meander during a long night.
Notes: Post- "The Long Game". A brief, lovely look into the Doctor's head after Rose gets injured on a quiet planet.
* Helter Skelter by Cryptile.
Author's summary: The Doctor's initial impressions of Rose Tyler. Songficcish.
Notes: Brilliant use of the song "Helter Skelter" as a frame for the Doctor's thoughts during "Rose".
How Does This Thing Work, Then? by infiniteviking.
Author's summary: Exploring the console room by means of the companion's perpetual question.
Notes: A nice study of Nine and the TARDIS by way of Rose's questions.
Literally, Or: A Brief Meditation on Why One Should Never Snark the Doctor by rosa_acicularis.
Author's summary: He aims to please. A quick detour after The Doctor Dances. Ficlet.
Notes: Hilarious episode tag.
Man-Whores and Wealthy Women by HonorH.
Author's summary: The Doctor and Jack have gotten themselves in a sticky situation and are about to be auctioned off as concubines on the planet Trioditis. What will Rose have to do in order to free her men?
Notes: I love stories where Rose gets to save the day.
Only Scars by etherati.
Author's summary: Badwolf in the throes of its birth/death/love/burning/echo/darkness/timeshatter. The sun's so bright, it leaves no shadows.
Notes: A scattered, somewhat poetic character/moment study of Bad Wolf.
Passing Through History by Carlisle_Cooperative.
Author's summary: The Doctor takes Rose for a visit with the (in)famous Cleopatra. Rather, he tries to; he might have got the course a bit wrong.
Notes: Nine and Rose and a trip to ancient Egypt.
Perpetual Motion by Meredith.
Author's summary: Nine, running. "After he dies, he finds himself back in his TARDIS control room. This doesn't entirely surprise him. After all, it is some sort of afterlife, and he can't think of anywhere else that looks remotely like heaven."
Notes: The Doctor after the Time War, up until he meets Rose. (But there's a hint of Rose before he meets her.)
Ragged Pair of Claws by Cryptile.
Author's summary: The Doctor and Rose visit the Cambrian.
Notes: After taking Rose to see the end of the Earth, the Doctor takes her to see her planet in its beginning. Excellent early Nine & Rose dialogue.
* Something Like Moebius by Doyle.
Author's summary: Eleven-year-old Jack has your typical possessed-alien-teacher experience.
Notes: After his teacher gets possessed, young Jack gets a glimpse of his older self, Nine, and Rose. Brilliant.
Stir by Doyle.
Author's summary: This was written for a fic challenge: my recipient asked for Nine, Jack and Mickey, so this is set in an AU where Mickey joined the TARDIS crew after Boomtown.
Notes: The Doctor, Jack, and Mickey end up in prison on a very friendly planet. Rose to the rescue.
NEW Summer Is Icumen In by Raven.
Author's summary: Nine, Rose and Jack. One summer, marked in love, loss, and Marxist revolutions.
Notes: A wonderful fic about Rose deciding to do her A-levels, and all the things that happen along the way.
The People You Meet by significantowl.
Author's summary: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has something to say on the subject of chance meetings.
Notes: Arthur and Ford run into the Doctor and Rose. More of an Arthur Dent-centric story, but plenty of Nine & Rose, and of course, a rather brilliant pastiche of Douglas Adams.
The Ragged Edge by jonquil.
Author's summary: He is but mad north-north west.
Notes: The Doctor has been falling his whole life, but after meeting Rose, falling takes on a new meaning.
The Road to Yes by Indiana_J.
Author's summary: In the in between bits of "Rose", the Doctor finds reasons to ask a second time. And discovers that it's just not Rose who needs to say yes.
Notes: A nice glimpse at the Doctor's thoughts during "Rose".
The War to End all Wars by snowballjane.
Author's summary: Searching for the victim of a miscarriage of justice, the Doctor and Rose visit a military mental hospital in 1918.
Notes: A rather somber adventure story that deals somewhat obliquely with the Time War.
Vellutato by Saganami Dreams.
Summary: Rose gets sick, and the Doctor is forced to be a bit domestic.
Notes: Manages to be sweet while simultaneously keeping the Doctor a bit dark and alien.
NEW Word Choice by rallalon.
Author's summary: “How’d you get to be called ‘the Doctor’?” A take on an unanswerable question.
Notes: A nice back and forth dialogue early on in the Nine & Rose friendship. Short but in character.
