General Whovian rec list last updated March 14, 2010.

The list was getting a bit too unwieldy, so I split it. Doctors Six through Ten (and other) are now located here. All of my Doctor Who rec lists can be accessed here.

I figured it was high time to do a non-D/R fic rec list. This is a mixed bag of gen, ship, slash, et al, though I tried to label them all appropriately, including marking adult fics as such.

Organized by Doctor's Era.

One

Comes the Rain by [livejournal.com profile] eponymous_rose.
Author's summary: The world ends and Susan is free.
Notes: A beautifully considered tag to "The Dalek Invasion of Earth". Susan has grown up, and so has her grandfather. Adds a wonderful depth to the farewell scene.

Space Between by [livejournal.com profile] biichan.
Author's summary: On an out-of-the-way alien planet, Susan and her grandfather find someone they never thought they'd see again.
Notes: Quirky and fun pre-series story of One and Susan running into Susan's grandmother, the Rani, complete with some wibbly-wobbly timey-wimeyness, a lot of excellent Whovian nerd-trivia references, and even a few moments of poignancy.

Two

A King is a King by Sheila Adamson.
Author's summary: The Jacobites: Wrong but Wromantic? An old-fashioned historical.
Notes: Jamie is forced to confront his history and his political beliefs.

Being Educational by [livejournal.com profile] amy_wolf.
Author's summary: Aliens demand that the Doctor, Jamie, and Zoe all share a bed. Zoe uses the chance to learn a few things.
Notes: Short and very silly, yet strangely accurate. A bit OT3-ish.

Dinner For Two by uktechgirl.
Author's summary: 'And this, Jamie, is an oyster. ‘You’ll not fool me, Doctor. That’s a rock, and I’m not eating it.’ The Second Doctor introduces Jamie to French cuisine. Their waiter, Guillaume, may never be the same again.
Notes: A sweet and funny story about the Doctor taking Jamie to posh French restaurant. No slashier than canon.

Four Things Jamie Learned about Time (and Travelling in it) by Doctor Tam.
Author's summary: As the title says. "Jamie frowned at his watch, then shrugged. Maybe he’d get the Doctor to explain in later."
Notes: Short and sweet- Jamie and time.

Greenwich Village (June 28, 1969) by [livejournal.com profile] biichan.
Author's summary: Jamie just wants to have a quiet drink. The Doctor knows more than he's letting on.
Notes: The Doctor at Stonewall, and some realizations. Two/Jamie.

Life as a Middle Schooler by [livejournal.com profile] infiniteviking.
Author's summary: The Doctor is forced to teach third grade.
Notes: Very short but really quite brilliant. I wish the Doctor had been one of my teachers.

Life So Far by Doctor Tam.
Author's summary: The Doctor doesn't like running into his future selves. (an attempt to shoehorn the multi-Doctor stories into some semblance of canon)
Notes: The Second Doctor's reflections about running into future selves.

One Long Night by Amy Wolf.
Author's summary: The Doctor attempts to solve a problem of storage space. Complications ensue.
Notes: A funny and rather perspicacious Two, Victoria, and Jamie story inspired by a few lines from a certain New Who episode.

Out of Reach by schildkroet ([livejournal.com profile] vail_kagami).
Author's summary: Jamie tries to remember.
Notes:Poignant fic about Jamie struggling with lost memories. Ouch.

Transit of Venus by LilacFree.
Author's summary: Who are you when you're not the man you used to be? Who created the Universe? And can a girl who was raised to be a human computer find happiness in a commune with a boy in a skirt and a Beatle in a gi?
Notes: Far more thoughtful than the summary would lead you to believe. Two, Jamie, Zoe, and the process of learning.

Underwear by sushigal007.
Author's summary: Originally written for drabble tag. Zoe gets Jamie a much needed present.
Notes: Another short and crackish story- they just seem to work for the Second Doctor's era.

Vital Equipment by Primsong.
Author's summary: Some things are more vital than others.
Notes: A spot-on missing scene from the Yeti era. Short and sweet.

Three

Come Back to Tell You All (I Shall Tell You All) by [livejournal.com profile] amberite.
Author's summary: An overview of the Third Doctor's life, around the themes of his traumatic exile and his fashion sense. Some slash, adult content, but it's really more of a character study.
Notes: A really excellent character study of Three, framed by some rather apt T.S. Eliot quotes. Some Three/Brig.

Five Places the Doctor Never Took Liz Shaw by [livejournal.com profile] eponymous_rose.
Author's summary: Liz Shaw has always prided herself on her ability to entertain several hypotheses without leaning too heavily one way or the other – blind faith is anathema to her nature.
Notes: Liz, traveling with the Doctor and finding herself.

Loves Them All by witchofthedesk ([livejournal.com profile] safcooper).
Author's summary: Not long after seeing the Doctor again at Deffrey Vale School, who should turn up?
Notes: A sweet meeting between post School-Reunion Sarah Jane and her first Doctor. (Three/Sarah Jane)

Naughty or Nice by AND.
Author's summary: "Doctor," the Brigadier said wearily from behind them, "surely you're not going to tell Miss Shaw and myself that St. Nicholas is an evil alien bent on conquering the Earth."
Notes: A very apropos Christmas story.

Sparking Plugs by [livejournal.com profile] infiniteviking.
Author's summary: The Doctor's a dab hand at fixing Bessie but he's barely scratched the surface with Jo.
Notes: Short but poignant vignette about Jo, and tinkering.

Still Waiting by Sheila Adamson.
Author's summary: The Brigadier and Jo practise life without the Doctor.
Notes: Jo and the Brig go on a mission without the sulking Doctor, but that's just the frame for the more thoughtful elements.

To Turn Again by [livejournal.com profile] eponymous_rose.
Author's summary: The Doctor's never quite what he seems, not really, and Jo knows it. Shortly after becoming his assistant in Terror of the Autons, she makes peace with the idea.
Notes: Another ruminant Jo piece, this one complete with adventure. Jo tries to figure out her place with UNIT and with the Doctor.

What the Thunder Said by [livejournal.com profile] eponymous_rose.
Author's summary: A doomed world, only slightly more lost than our own; through the eye of the Inferno and into the realm of memory. Time's end.
Notes: A look at the various characters in the alt!world of "Inferno", and in our own.

Four

NEW Dull Day In August by Raven ([livejournal.com profile] loneraven).
Summary: Four and Romana II, and a day at the boardwalk.
Notes: Lovely vignette of the simple and wonderful sort.

From the Canyons to the Stars by [livejournal.com profile] elliptic_eye.
Author's summary: The Doctor and Leela; two friends sampling infinity.
Notes: A meditative mood piece about Four and Leela in the desert.

Happy Endings, Hasty Exits: Double Take by vvj5 ([livejournal.com profile] lost_spook).
Author's summary: The Android Invasion - Sarah Jane: "I want to stay on earth and marry Harry!"
Notes: One of series of A/U shorts in the style of Leela in "The Invasion of Time". A rather adorable Sarah & Harry story.

Harry in a Hole by vvj5 ([livejournal.com profile] lost_spook).
Author's summary: What it says. Harry Sullivan falls down a hole and finds he's not alone.
Notes: An excellent Harry Sullivan story with an edge of creepiness that would have made a perfect episode.

Just You Wait by srichard.
Author's summary: Four & Leela go to see "My Fair Lady" on stage.
Notes: A hysterical Four and Leela piece, made even funnier by the fact that Leela was created to be an Eliza Doolittle like character.

La Vie Boheme by Doctor Tam.
Author's summary: A non-linear character study: "He composes a symphony for accordion and dog whistle, goes pike fishing in the Thames, and gets a sunburn on his nose. After all, the universe isn’t his responsibility."
Notes: A Fourth Doctor character study; scattered to great effect.

Last Year's Blooms by etherati.
Author's summary: Learning to dance, relearning the dance of the left-behind, and things blowing up.
Notes: A mixture of light-heartedness and poignancy. Post-POTW Jack observes Four and Sarah Jane at a UNIT party.

Maybe It's Just North Dakota by [livejournal.com profile] minerva_fan.
Author's summary: On what once was Earth, Sarah and Four spend a quiet moment together contemplating the sunset.
Notes: A short and sweet introspective Four/Sarah Jane piece.

The Good, the Bad, and the Hovercrafts by [livejournal.com profile] eponymous_rose.
Author's summary: In which various alien entities get held off at the pass, the Doctor and Romana take up jogging, and K-9, to everyone's horror, tells a joke.
Notes: The sort of story one could easily see as a bit of an actual episode. Spot-on characterizations and humor.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to Getting Laid on Gallifrey by [livejournal.com profile] lizbee.
Author's summary: The Gallifreyan Karma Sutra is a very short book.
Notes: Short, funny, and sweet Four/Romana I-ish story, framed by Adams-esque bits about Gallifrey.

Threads by Vali (violetisblue).
Author's summary: Romana finds that her tastes have begun to change.
Notes: An absolutely brilliant Romana I character story, with thoughts on why she might have chosen to regenerate while traveling with the Doctor. Mildly Four/Romana.

To the Rescue by [livejournal.com profile] dbskyler.
Author's summary: Sarah Jane is in Aberdeen! Help is on the way.
Notes: Lots of people come to rescue Sarah Jane from Aberdeen. She doesn't really need rescuing. Both cute and funny.

Warmth by [livejournal.com profile] minerva_fan.
Author's summary: Set after Pyramids of Mars. Sarah Jane Smith doesn't remember ever seeing the Doctor cold, shivering. She doesn't remember ever seeing him helpless before.
Notes: A poignant Sarah Jane/Four episode tag. Short and lovely.

Wham, Bam, Thank You Clam by anonymous (From the Who Kink Meme).
Summary: Harry/Giant Clam
Notes: A short, awesome crackfic from the kink meme.

Five

"Bohemian Rhapsody" by aces.
Author's summary: There's Five. And there's the Master. And there's Tegan's underwear and Turlough's blazer, but that's a slightly different plotline.
Notes: Complete and utter crack involving Five, the Master, Tegan, Turlough, and a club. Some Doctor/Master, vague references to other shenanigans.

Daemonology by Airie ([livejournal.com profile] airie_fairy).
Author's summary: Originally intended for the churchontime ficathon based on doyle_sb4's prompt "Five and Nyssa: the good old 'marry or die' cliche." The Doctor and Nyssa arrive in 1980s Melrose, a bastion of punk and new wave, just in time for a teenage fad to take a dangerous turn.
Notes: Rather all over the place, but funny and fluffy. I love Nyssa.

Home Thoughts From Abroad by Doyle ([livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4).
Author's summary: Nyssa finds something of home in the Forest of Cheem.
Notes: A subtle, sublime story with Nyssa & Five, with a hint of romance, and some faint references to the New Who episode "The End of the World".

In the Waning Light by aces.
Author's summary: When she was younger, she would never have expected her life to take the course it did.
Notes: An A/U in which Nyssa stayed on Earth. The Doctor visits, some years later.

Running the Banner Down by etherati.
Author's summary: Tear down the person you were, get out from under the shadows, rebuild with what you have left. Sometimes it doesn’t feel like enough, and sometimes the cost is too high. Character piece, Five.
Notes: Five is finding himself, but is haunted by the ghost of Four.

The Lonely God(zilla) by [livejournal.com profile] cryptile.
Author's summary: Because nothing else is canon...
Notes: Five lectures Nyssa about Godzilla, Tegan and Adric bicker, and certain parallels are drawn. Hysterical.

The Parking Permit by [livejournal.com profile] slwatson.
Author's summary: What's worse than hostile monsters? Red tape!
Notes: A humor piece about Nyssa being forced to deal with red tape.

The Proper Application of Useful Knowledge by aces.
Author's summary: Post-"Enlightenment" fic. Turlough angsts. The Doctor looks uncomfortable.
Notes: Turlough is perhaps a bit softer here than one might generally imagine, but either way, a nice episode tag cum character exploration.

'Twixt Earth and Paradise by Patrice.
Author's summary: The Doctor is curious about a new settlement on a small, remote planet. However, an inquisitive mind is not always a good thing.
Notes: A really excellent multi-chapter adventure fic. Well-written, and well-characterized; could easily have been an episode. Gen, and set early on in Five's tenure.

Thanks for the recs! By the way, I noticed the link to "The Right Doctor" isn't working -- there's a stray " character at the end of it.
