Rose/Alt!Doctor list last updated March 13, 2010.
New recs are marked as such. I've also starred (*) a few of my personal favorites.

alt!Eight

Across the Sky by lizbetann. (WIP)
Author's summary: Agent Rose Tyler of Torchwood has the most knowledge of extraterrestrial life on the planet Earth. When a mysterious stranger shows up in a blue police box, first she thinks that it is a hoax. Then she thinks that it's a miracle. And then she realizes history has a bad habit of repeating, and she's the only one who knows what was the result of the Time War in the other universe...
Notes: A WIP that's updated extremely sporadically. Rose, Jackie, and Pete are all very well characterized, and pre-war Eight is lovely as always.

Doomsday Dimensions by Dr Miracle.
Author's summary: Rose's parallel universe has a parallel Doctor--in his Eighth incarnation, unscarred by the Time War. But something's afoot on Gallifrey...
Notes: Epic length series of action-packed adventures with Rose and alt!Eight. Emphasis on the action, but a well-developed universe.

Fallen Angel by ponygirl.
Author's summary: It's a new universe, but above her head, the same old war is raging...
Notes: Again, excellent characterization, including a beautifully conflicted Jack.

* Interaction Locations Series by whochick.
Author's summary: A different, plot-based take on post-Doomsday Rose and the Doctor ... because sometimes it takes more than Void to keep two people apart.
Notes: Fantastic, multi-chaptered adventures make up this alt!Eight/Rose series. The first two stories, "Diamond Sea" and "The Sky on Fire" are complete, and a third one, "The Haymarket Precedent" is currently in progress. Highly recommended.

* Interactions Locations Universe Drabbles: Things Less Simple and Of Dreams by whochick.
Notes: These are two IL Universe drabbles that can only be found in the author's community, but are well worth the read.

Wolf at the Door by emeryboard.
Author's summary: The Time Lords know that time is a river, flowing through history. They also know that small changes can often have no impact on the stream's progress. But they also know that a pebble in the right place can turn the river from it's old banks, and send it hurtling down a different path...
Notes: This is more of an A/U than an Alt!Verse story, but I couldn't leave it off the list. I love the juxtaposition of a much harder Rose with the Doctor's gentlest incarnation. The second story in the series, "Jack of All Trades", (as the title might give away) adds Jack in for good measure. Very gen, but wonderful characterizations, excellent writing, and TV-worthy adventures.

alt!Nine

A Light in the Dark by airavanya.
Author's summary: It shocks him.
Notes: Alt!Nine is drawn to Earth only to find Rose... and her son. Lovely one-shot (complete with likable, not!twee child).

Clockwork by Meredith.
Author's summary: AU, Post-Doomsday, Alt!Nine/Rose. The battle's won, and he's losing her. But he wasn't fooling anybody, like he promised: it's worth it, to him. Even this.
Notes: Sad, and a bit scattered at times, but quite lovely.

Hall of Mirrors by WMR.
Author's summary: Eventually, she will have to accept that this time he really does mean it. That sometimes impossible really is impossible. Post-Doomsday fic - now completed.
Notes: Very well done, excellent Doctor/Rose interactions, grown-up Rose, perfect altNine. Multi-chapter.
Sequel: Altered Images, though it is more of an OT3 (with Jack) story.

Hiding in Plain Sight by Gillian Taylor.
Author's summary: There's no such thing as a quiet life when you're Defender of the Earth. But some things can still take your breath away.
Notes: Post-DD, Rose runs into a fobwatched alt!Nine... and his sister, Donna.
Sequels: Lunar Larceny and Fortune's Hostage.

* Illyria Series by tardis_stowaway.
Author's summary: Three years after Doomsday, Rose finds her new universe's version of the Ninth Doctor. Rose may be running for her life, but she's not the one most in need of rescue. Angst and adventure ensue, along with touches of silliness. Also, the TARDIS looks like a ticket booth. The title of the series comes from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. In the play, a tragic shipwreck leaves Viola stranded in a foreign land, much as Rose is stranded in another universe. Much mistaken identity and unspoken love ensue.
Notes: Wonderful characterizations of both Rose and altNine, complete with clear, well-written, adventures. Highly recommended.

Second Chances by HonorH. (Adult)
Author's summary: And older, wiser and sadder Rose meets the last person she ever expected to see in Pete's World, and they may just end up rescuing each other.
Notes: Good characterization and consideration of detail. Subtle and sweet.

Through A Glass Darkly by WMR.
Author's summary: It’s only when she’s finally given up looking for a way back that she finds him.
Notes: Six years post-Doomsday, alt!Nine and alt!Jack show up in London. FYI- it's a Nine/Jack and Nine/Jack/Rose story.

Try by prchung. (WIP)
Author's summary: An unexpected discovery on her alternate Earth opens wounds Rose only just started to close.
Notes: Twelve chapters in, though the author updates rather erratically. Still absolutely worth the read- a series of small things leads Rose to a rather broken Nine, but she's not the only interested party.

Wolf Moon by ThroughanAmberFocus. (Adult)
Author's summary: Start with one happy, well-adjusted Rose Tyler living her life in the parallel world at age twenty-nine. Add one top of the line TARDIS with an attitude and a relationship problem with one angry, annoyed, crotchety old alternate Doctor who shouldn’t exist but does. Shake well.
Notes: Adventures, quests, buckets of sexual tension, and then smut. First in a planned series. The second story Hunger Moon is currently a WIP. Style is a bit YMMV-y.

Human alt!Nine

NEW I'm Not Really A Waitress by nylana.
Author's summary: An AU Nine, an AU Rose. Is anything really what it seems?
Written for the AU challenge 18 at [profile] then_theres_us.

Notes: A bit scattered and ambiguous, and yet still manages to capture Nine & Rose despite being totally A/U. YMMV.

* In Human Hands by rallalon. (WIP)
Author's summary: It's as good a city as any to be swallowed up by, Barcelona. Now if only he could get this little blond pest of a tourist to leave him alone. [AU towards the end of S1 with a S3 twist; 9!Smith]
Notes: More of an A/U with a human Nine that an alt!Nine, but couldn't be left off the list. Deft, lovely writing, and a wonderful slow build in the relationship between Rose and Smith. A multi-chapter WIP that's updated slowly but steadily. Worth it for the language alone, but so much more.

NEW Leap of Faith by ThroughanAmberFocus. (WIP)
Author's summary: Hiding from the Family of Blood, the alt!Ninth Doctor turns himself into John Smith via the chameleon arch and with his companion Toshiko Sato, takes a job at Torchwood. He clashes with everyone he meets and Rose Tyler, the beautiful young director of Torchwood Field Operative Training and the daughter of his boss, is no exception.
Notes: An expanded version of the author's short story, "Third Time's the Charm" (see below).

Never Quite Normal by Jessa L'Rynn. (Adult)
Author's summary: He can't abide his face in the mirror or the memory of what he has done. The silence has made him insane and the insanity has made him dangerous. At the end of the Time War, the Doctor takes drastic steps, with the help of friends old and new. Nine AU.
Notes: An A/U in which a post- Time War Nine decides to live as a human on Earth, with the help of The Brig, Harry Sullivan, and John Benton. He still manages to cross paths with Rose. A bit slow to get started, but well worth the effort.

* Seed Pearls by HonorH.
Author's summary: When all Rose's memories of the Doctor are stripped away from her, she knows something is terribly wrong--but occasionally, just occasionally, the universe gives back as much as it takes away.
Notes: In the alt!verse, Rose meets the human Doctor John Smith, but mystery and trouble abound. Well developed and complex.
Sequel: Shoulda Named Him Damian is a little snippet of their lives later on down the line.

Survival by HonorH.
Author's summary: We all do what we have to to survive. Heroes crossover. Of all the things that could’ve happened to him after he got the hell out of New York, the man who called himself Claude Raines would least have expected to find himself in London, visible most of the time, holding down an actual job, and shagging his boss’s gorgeous twenty-something daughter.
Notes: One shot crossover with Chris Eccleston's character Claude from Heroes.
Sequel: Living is a little follow-up snippet.

this is life for the making by takethewords.
Author's summary: He doesn't tease back, just looks into her doll like eyes and smiles a thin smile. “Missed you, ya know.” And he hopes she realizes the double meaning.
Notes: A "Journey's End" AU in which the half-human Doctor is Nine.

NEW Third Time's the Charm by ThroughanAmberFocus.
Author's summary: A familiar face comes to work at Torchwood. He's not the Doctor. He's just John Smith. But why does he look so much like the man Rose first met in a different universe? An AU set in Pete's World where Journey's End and End of Time never happened.
Notes: A fobwatched Alt!Nine story. Author is writing an expanded version, "Leap of Faith", currently in progress (see above).

alt!Ten

And Dismantle the Sun by icebluenothing.
Author's summary: Can Rose adjust to normal life when her life had been anything but normal?
Notes: Rose is back working at the shop in the altverse when she sees mannequins moving...

Best Dressed by Erya.
Summary: Rose has a surprising meeting at an intergalactic conference.
Notes: Just a drabble, but a fun one.

Five Memories the Doctor Never Lived by the_spin.
Author's summary: “I’m stuck on Earth like an ordinary person, like a human? How rubbish is that?”
This is a companion piece to 'The Road Not Taken,' which should be read first.

Notes: As mentioned, a companion piece to The Road Not Taken. The Doctor is split in two; one of him stays on the TARDIS, the other goes back to Pete's Universe with Rose. "Five Memories..." is the story of Rose and the TARDIS-less Doctor, living in the altverse. Thoughtful and true to character. Written before "Journey's End"; similar in themes.

Simmer Dim by Joely Jo. (Adult)
Author's summary: With the events of Doomsday just a distant memory, Rose Tyler and Mickey Smith make a discovery that they cannot leave alone. But what they find will take Rose on a journey she never expected. Will she come to terms with what she’s faced with, or will the carefully constructed life she’s built for herself come crashing down?
Notes: Not exactly alt!Ten or alt!humanTen but sort of both and neither. Excellent, whichever way you chose to categorize it.

Human alt!Ten

A Sky Without Zeppelins by ThroughanAmberFocus. (Adult)
Author's summary: In a newly sealed off alternate reality, a chameleon arched fully human Ten meets a very different Rose Tyler after being left behind by his Time Lord self and the Rose he once loved. This is their story.
Notes: An alt!Rose/human!Ten story. Updated regularly. Author's pacing/style a bit YMMV. Has an in-progress sequel, A Sky Without Stars.

Alternative by Adlervan. (Adult)
Author's summary: 10Roseother. Post Doomsday. In her parallel universe, Rose meets someone new...who is remarkably familiar.
Notes: Rose meets a human alt!Ten who is a Professor at Oxford. Rather scattered, but quite original. Another YMMV fic, however.

An Alternate Thing by Shrak.
Author's summary: What if Peter Carlisle's mum hadn't died from an overdose?
Notes: This is an A/U take on the author's pre-established universe (see "The Way of Things" below), and has a very different Rose and Peter. Also, there are a handful of sequels, (several quite adult), which can be found here.

* The Way of Things by Shrak. (Adult)
Author's summary: A post-Doomsday story, set in the Alt!Verse. It's been over three years since Rose and the Doctor said goodbye. What happens when she not only meets his doppelganger, but has to work with him? A Blackpool/Doctor Who crossover.
Notes: Great mystery, excellent sex scenes, great characterization. Author continues with a variety of excellent ficlets and longer stories in this universe.

Vagaries of Life by malaleen. (Adult)
Author's summary: Doctor Who/Blackpool crossover. Sometimes, when you least expect it, life changes and becomes nothing you’d ever dreamed, but everything you ever wanted. Rose Tyler discovers life and love after the Doctor.
Notes: An earlier Doctor Who/Blackpool crossover. Peter Carlisle works for Torchwood in the alt!Verse. The alt!Torchwood crew also plays a big part.

Multi/Other alt!Doctors

A Week in the Life by Jessa L'Rynn.
Author's summary: A week in the life of one Rose Tyler, Defender of the Earth. As a chain of circumstances comes to the end, it also comes back to the beginning.
Notes: OK, this is a little bit of a cheat, as instead of a Doctor/Rose story, it is a story of Rose slowly becoming her own version of the Doctor in the alt!verse. However, it is lovely, and I couldn't resist.

Bohemian Rose by Raven.
Author's summary: Rose has a date. Surprisingly, it's going well.
Notes: A girl!Doctor story. There are a couple more, some by other people, but I especially enjoyed this first one.

The Difference is in Those Little Details by nekare.
Author's summary: Post Doomsday, Rose tries to get on with her life.
Notes: Rose sees the alt!Doctor in several of his past incarnations, and finally, in his Tenth. A bit sad.
